In January 2005, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services published guidelines on the use of postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) for HIV in nonoccupational settings (ACC Mar 1 2005). Little is known, however, about the feasibility of applying these guidelines to adolescents who have been sexually assaulted, particularly given the high rate of comorbid mental illness in this population (Am J Emerg Med 2000; 18:282, and Arch Ped Adol Med 2006; 160:754).
In this prospective, industry-supported study, investigators followed adolescents who presented to a New York City clinic within 72 hours after sexual assault and received a 28-day course of AZT/3TC (Combivir). Exclusion criteria included pregnancy and history of recurrent sexual abuse. Prim…
