The 14th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections took place this year for the first time in Los Angeles, in the downtown convention center, drawing nearly 4000 participants. Continuing an evolution of the conference that has occurred during the past several years, two parallel meetings seemed to be going on at the same time — one focusing on state-of-the art clinical, epidemiologic, and basic science in developed countries, and a second one looking at these same themes in resource-poor settings. As usual, we have chosen to review those presentations that are likely to have the greatest practical effect on clinical care today (see below).
