Because the prevalence of quinolone-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae in the U.S. is rising, the CDC no longer recommends fluoroquinolones for the treatment of gonorrhea or related conditions, such as pelvic inflammatory disease. Ceftriaxone is now the only recommended treatment available for gonococcal infections in the U.S.
