On May 30, 2007, the WHO and UNAIDS issued new guidelines regarding HIV testing and counseling in healthcare facilities. Unlike previous guidelines, which put the onus on patients to actively seek HIV tests, the current guidelines advocate for provider-initiated HIV testing.
In all regions of the world, HIV testing and counseling should be recommended to all patients who present with signs or symptoms of underlying HIV disease.
In countries where the prevalence of HIV exceeds 1% in the general population, HIV testing and counseling should be recommended to all patients in all healthcare facilities.
