Influenza vaccination is recommended for all HIV-infected patients, but little is known about the actual incidence of influenza in such patients. Results from this prospective study provide some helpful clinical context.
From November 2003 through April 2006, investigators at an outpatient HIV clinic in Montreal recruited consecutive patients who presented with febrile respiratory symptoms during the fall, winter, and spring seasons. Respiratory infections were defined by a documented temperature of >38.0°C (100.4°F) with associated cough, tachypnea, dyspnea, wheezing, stridor, rhinorrhea, sore throat, or myalgias.
