Many studies have documented a higher incidence of lung cancer in the HIV-infected population than in the general population (ACC Feb 5 2007). However, few studies have adequately controlled for cigarette smoking, which is also more prevalent among HIV-infected patients.
Researchers examined lung cancer mortality in a large ongoing cohort study of injection-drug users in Baltimore who have been followed prospectively since 1988. Median age at study entry was 35; most participants are black men, and about 75% were not infected with HIV at enrollment, although incident infections did occur during follow-up.
