Human growth hormone recombinant (hGHr) has been evaluated as a treatment for HIV-associated central fat accumulation. However, the optimal dosing strategy for long-term maintenance of fat loss has not been determined. To investigate this further, researchers conducted an industry-sponsored trial of hGHr among HIV-infected patients who had a fasting glucose level <110 mg/dL, a 2-hour postload glucose level <140 mg/dL on an oral glucose tolerance test, a high waist-to-hip ratio (≥0.95 for men; ≥0.90 for women), and a large waist circumference (>88.2 cm for men; >75.3 cm for women).
