As the average age of patients living with HIV increases, diseases of aging are assuming greater clinical importance. In this cross-sectional study, researchers describe the prevalence of chronic kidney disease among patients receiving care at a designated AIDS center in New York City. The glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was calculated using the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) equation. Chronic kidney disease was defined by a GFR <60 mL/min/1.73 m2 or by a urine protein level ≥100 mg/dL.
A total of 1239 patients (90% of them black or Hispanic) were included in the analysis. One quarter had CD4 counts <200 cells/mm3, and one half had detectable viral loads. Approximately 15% of patients had chronic or end-stage kidney disease. N…
