The use of antiretroviral medications for nonoccupational postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) of HIV is well supported by observational data and is recommended by the CDC (ACC Mar 1 2005). However, little is known about the extent to which certain target populations, such as men who have sex with men (MSM), are aware of this intervention and are using it. To address this gap, investigators surveyed 1819 MSM in California in early 2006 about their knowledge and use of PEP. The men were also asked about preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP), an approach that is currently being evaluated in clinical trials.
