HIV Prevalence in the U.S. Population

Approximately 0.5% of people aged 18 to 49 living in U.S. households are infected with HIV, according to National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys conducted from 1999 through 2006. This prevalence estimate is roughly equivalent to that generated from the 1988–1994 surveys, but it might not accurately reflect the state of the national epidemic, which disproportionately affects the institutionalized and those without stable “household” living situations.
