Routine medical exams represent an important opportunity to identify and treat asymptomatic sexually transmitted infections (STIs). A number of national surveys suggest, however, that screening for high-risk sexual behavior and STIs has not been universally incorporated into routine practice.
To explore this trend further, investigators combed a database of medical claims from approximately 5 million people and their dependents who received care through more than 100 commercial health plans across the U.S. ICD-9 V-codes were used to identify routine medical exams (both general and gynecologic) that occurred between 2000 and 2003 among individuals aged 15 to 54.
