Recently, the CDC analyzed trends in new diagnoses of HIV/AIDS, using data from 33 states with confidential, name-based HIV case reporting. Cases were categorized according to reported likely mode of HIV acquisition (including male-to-male sexual contact, injection drug use [IDU], male-to-male sexual contact plus IDU, and high-risk heterosexual activity); cases lacking such information were redistributed across categories using statistical methods.
