The SMART trial clearly demonstrated that treatment interruption during chronic HIV infection results in CD4-cell decline, prompt viral rebound, and, when compared with continuous antiretroviral therapy (ART), an increased risk for clinical events (AIDS Clin Care Nov 29 2006).
