Current guidelines for initial antiretroviral therapy recommend abacavir/3TC or tenofovir/FTC, each in combination with efavirenz or a boosted PI. At this year’s International AIDS Conference, we heard about two drugs (raltegravir and rilpivirine) that are being evaluated as potential alternatives to efavirenz or PIs. We also heard conflicting data on the virologic efficacy of abacavir/3TC versus tenofovir/FTC.
