Syphilis rates are rising again in San Francisco after declining for the past 3 years. During the first 8 months of 2008, 409 syphilis cases were diagnosed in the city, compared with 305 during the same time period in 2007. Eighty-six percent of all syphilis cases occurred among men who have sex with men.
