Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) has become less common since the advent of potent antiretroviral therapy (ART), but morbidity and mortality remain substantial because of the lack of specific, effective treatment. In the present study, investigators describe the incidence, presenting symptoms, and prognosis of PML from 1995 to 2006 in a population-based cohort of 4649 HIV-infected individuals in Denmark.
During the study period, the incidence of PML decreased from 3.3 cases per 1000 person-years in 1995–1996 to 1.8 in 1997–1999 to 1.3 in 2000–2006.
