Some studies have shown marked changes in the incidence of cancer among HIV-infected patients since the advent of potent antiretroviral therapy (ART) — in particular, that the rates of certain AIDS-defining cancers (Kaposi sarcoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma) have declined and that non–AIDS-defining malignancies account for an increasing proportion of cancer cases. To evaluate these trends further, investigators analyzed data collected prospectively from 4498 HIV-infected U.S. military beneficiaries (91% men) between 1984 and 2006. Three quarters of the patients received their HIV diagnoses before 1996. At the time of diagnosis, median age was 28 and median CD4 count was 510 cells/mm3 (only 5.7% had CD4 counts <200 cells/mm3).
