Lopinavir/ritonavir is a potent boosted PI that has been associated with more adverse metabolic events than some of the newer boosted PIs. Given its favorable lipid profile, boosted atazanavir has been proposed as an effective once-daily alternative.
To evaluate the safety and efficacy of switching from twice-daily lopinavir/r to once-daily ritonavir-boosted atazanavir, investigators conducted a randomized, open-label, noninferiority trial among 248 patients in Spain who had achieved virologic suppression (<200 copies/mL for >6 months) on twice-daily lopinavir/r plus two NRTIs.
