Tenofovir use has been linked to sporadic cases of Fanconi syndrome (proximal renal tubular dysfunction resulting in the inability to reabsorb electrolytes and amino acids), but how prevalent is this disorder among HIV-infected patients? To find out, investigators performed a cross-sectional study of 284 consecutively enrolled HIV-infected patients at a hospital in Madrid: 154 were receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) that contained tenofovir, 49 were receiving ART that did not contain tenofovir, and 81 were antiretroviral naive. Clinically meaningful renal tubular damage was defined as the presence of at least two altered parameters of tubular function, as measured by serum and 24-hour urine testing.
