Both HIV infection and potent combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) have been linked to excess risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). In the present study, investigators evaluated how various CVD markers shift after initiation of ART.
Thirty-seven treatment-naive HIV-infected men were randomized to start receiving lopinavir/ritonavir plus either AZT/3TC or nevirapine. Carotid intima-media thickness, arterial stiffness, compliance coefficients, and biomarker levels were measured at baseline and then at 3, 12, and 24 months after treatment initiation.
