Does hepatitis C virus (HCV) coinfection influence CD4-cell recovery in HIV-infected patients starting antiretroviral therapy (ART)? Some studies suggest that it does, but data have been conflicting.
In the present analysis from the EuroSIDA study (a prospective, observational cohort study), investigators evaluated annual changes in CD4-cell counts according to HCV serostatus among 4208 HIV-infected patients who achieved persistent virologic suppression (<50 copies/mL) while receiving combination ART. A total of 822 patients (20%) were HCV antibody positive, and among these, 648 (79%) had detectable serum HCV RNA.
