HIV clinical trials are critical in advancing therapy, but not all patients choose to participate. To determine what factors influence this decision, researchers surveyed HIV-infected patients who were receiving care at a university-based clinic in Los Angeles.
One hundred fifteen patients were surveyed, 92% of them men. Fifty-six (50%) had participated in a clinical trial at some point, including 28 who were currently enrolled in one. Seventy-three percent had spoken with their doctors about clinical studies; such conversations were more likely among patients who had participated in a trial than among those who had not.
