A higher CD4-cell count protects against HIV-related opportunistic infections. Might it also reduce the risk for non-AIDS complications? Investigators from CASCADE — a multinational collaboration involving 23 cohorts of patients with known seroconversion dates — sought to define the relationship between non-AIDS deaths and HIV-related immunodeficiency.
To be eligible, patients had to have been at least 16 years old at the time of seroconversion, with follow-up since January 1996, when potent combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) became widely available.
