New HIV infections continue to occur among men who have sex with men (MSM). To provide better direction for intervention, researchers assessed the association between HIV seroconversion and sexual behavior, depression, alcohol, and other drug use among MSM who were HIV negative on enrollment in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (n=1667).
Sixty-six percent of the cohort participants were white, and 24% were black. At baseline, the mean age was 44.8; 79% of participants reported no unprotected receptive anal sex partners (URASPs), 32% reported moderate to binge-level alcohol use, and 24% had clinical depression based on a symptom checklist.
