The non-AIDS health effects of HIV infection can increase risks for heart disease, cancer, and other common conditions. These researchers assessed the incidence of non–AIDS-defining malignancies (non-ADMs) from 1997 through 2004 among patients in the Veterans Affairs Healthcare System (98% were men). In all, 32,942 HIV-infected patients were compared with 64,966 matched HIV-uninfected controls; median follow-ups were 5 years and 6 years, respectively, in the two groups.
