How does nevirapine compare with ritonavir-boosted atazanavir in treatment-naive patients? Data are now available from the ARTEN study, a multinational, randomized trial sponsored by the maker of nevirapine.
As described by Vicente Soriano at the 5th IAS Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention, the ARTEN trial compared three different strategies: nevirapine twice daily, nevirapine once daily, and ritonavir-boosted atazanavir, each combined with tenofovir/FTC [Abstract LBPEB07]. Per inclusion criteria, all 569 study participants had CD4 counts below the thresholds specified in the nevirapine package insert for reducing hepatotoxicity and hypersensitivity (250 cells/mm3 for women and 400 cells/mm3 for men).
