The integrase inhibitor raltegravir, representing a new class of antiretroviral therapy, has quickly established itself as an important component in the management of both treatment-experienced and treatment-naive patients. Will the maturation inhibitor bevirimat follow suit? Previous research suggests that the antiretroviral activity of bevirimat is limited by polymorphisms in the gag region of the HIV genome, and that evolution of PI resistance may further reduce susceptibility to bevirimat.
