Peripheral sensory neuropathy (both HIV-related and drug-related) remains common in the era of potent antiretroviral therapy. Diagnosis of distal sensory polyneuropathy (DSP) can be challenging and often requires considerable time, expertise, and the use of expensive and even invasive tests. In this study from the AIDS Clinical Trials Group, investigators evaluated whether DSP could be diagnosed as reliably with a subset of relatively simple tests as with tests that are more time-consuming (such as quantitative sensory tests) or invasive (such as nerve conduction studies and assessment of epidermal nerve fiber density).
