Ten years ago, the idea of taking one pill once daily as a full HIV treatment regimen would have seemed like a pipe dream. However, this became reality in 2006, when the FDA approved Atripla, a once-daily coformulation of tenofovir/FTC/efavirenz. Now, one of the comanufacturers of that pill (Gilead Sciences) is developing a potential competitor, known as the “Quad” pill, that contains tenofovir, FTC, the investigational integrase inhibitor elvitegravir, and the investigational pharmacologic booster cobicistat (formerly GS-9350).
