Since effective antiretroviral therapy (ART) became available, the causes of death for people living with HIV have changed dramatically. In this analysis of immunologically stable HIV-infected patients, investigators report the risk of death following both AIDS and non-AIDS complications.
The analysis included 5472 patients from the SMART study and 4111 from the ESPRIT study; median baseline CD4 counts were 597 cells/mm3 and 457 cells/mm3, respectively. Approximately three quarters of the patients were receiving virologically suppressive ART.
