Several cohort studies have shown a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among HIV-infected patients (JW AIDS Clin Care Feb 12 2010). The latest such evidence comes from the Swiss HIV Cohort Study, in which researchers measured 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels in stored plasma samples that were collected from 211 patients at the time they started antiretroviral therapy (103 in the spring and 108 in the fall) and then 12 and 18 months later.
Approximately 47% of all samples collected in the spring and 15% of those collected in the fall showed evidence of vitamin D deficiency (25-hydroxyvitamin D levels <30 nmol/L).
