Most HIV-infected patients eventually require lifelong antiretroviral therapy (ART) to maintain virologic suppression. However, little is known about the likelihood of ART adherence for more than 3 to 5 years. This study describes long-term trends in adherence among 2060 patients who had free access to ART through a clinic pharmacy.
Drug coverage was measured as a surrogate for adherence: For each 6-month period that patients were receiving ART between July 1999 and May 2008, investigators calculated the proportion of days in which there was a documented, dispensed prescription for at least three antiretrovirals.
