In May 2010, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released an updated version of its guidelines for perinatal antiretroviral use. The update includes the following additions:
A new guideline rating system is incorporated, in which the strength of a recommendation is denoted by letters (A=strong, B=moderate, C=optional) and the quality of evidence is delineated by Roman numerals (I=randomized trials, II=nonrandomized trials or observational studies with long-term outcomes, III=expert opinion).
Data are included from recently published trials of antiretroviral therapy (ART) during breast-feeding, although the panel reiterates that breast-feeding is not recommended for HIV-infected women in the U.S. under any circumstances.
