For the second year in a row, prevention research turned out to be the biggest story in HIV medicine. By far, the most notable studies were the first efficacy trials of an antiretroviral-based vaginal microbicide and of oral pre-exposure prophylaxis, but there was also increasing evidence that treatment of HIV infection dramatically reduces the risk of viral transmission to uninfected partners — potentially even having an effect on new diagnoses in some communities. On the treatment side, the recommended strategies have been consolidated in the past year, now that we have a clearer understanding of the best initial regimens and switch strategies.
