Report from the 18th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections

The Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) returned to wintry Boston this year, for the fourth time in the past decade. Continuing a theme from other recent HIV meetings, CROI 2011 featured many presentations and posters on HIV prevention interventions, with further details about iPrEx taking center stage. Clinical studies of various antiretroviral therapy (ART) strategies were reported, most notably on optimal ART timing in patients with active tuberculosis — and the presentations on zinc finger nucleases (which are far from ready for prime time) show that research on HIV eradication is moving forward.
