Women who receive single-dose nevirapine for prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV have an increased risk for virologic failure on later treatment regimens containing nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (JW AIDS Clin Care Oct 18 2010). In many developed countries, regimens other than single-dose nevirapine are now used for PMTCT, but little is known about how exposure to these regimens might influence treatment response during a subsequent pregnancy.
