End-stage liver disease from hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is an increasing cause of morbidity and mortality among HIV-infected patients. Liver transplantation has been shown to be effective in this population (Am J Transplant 2008; 8:355), but concerns persist regarding patient and graft survival rates and also the possible loss of HIV control because of drug–drug interactions.
Now, investigators have conducted a meta-analysis of 15 observational studies and 49 case reports, describing 902 HIV-infected patients who underwent liver transplantation in the current HIV treatment era. Most of the studies were conducted in Europe (45) or the U.S. (15).
