Tenofovir/FTC constitutes first-line therapy for hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in HIV-coinfected patients. However, some patients have incomplete HBV suppression on this regimen. In a single-arm, prospective, observational study, investigators evaluated whether such patients might benefit from the addition of entecavir to their current therapy.
Thirteen patients who had failed to suppress HBV DNA after at least 6 months of tenofovir/FTC were included in the study. The median baseline HBV DNA level — 2814 IU/mL — was relatively low and may reflect partial suppression of HBV replication by tenofovir/FTC.
