Studies evaluating potential risk factors for chronic kidney disease (CKD) in HIV-infected patients have tended to focus on tenofovir exposure. However, at the 6th IAS Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention, three separate cohort studies implicated the use of boosted protease inhibitors (PIs).
In a multicenter French study, boosted PI use was independently associated with a threefold increase in CKD risk. Ritonavir-boosted atazanavir and lopinavir/ritonavir were the most commonly used PIs in the cohort [Morlat P et al. Abstract WEPDB0104].
