In a phase II, randomized trial reported earlier this year, researchers showed that etravirine has fewer adverse neuropsychiatric effects than efavirenz when used as part of an initial HIV treatment regimen (JW AIDS Clin Care Feb 7 2011). Now, the same group has reported on the relative efficacy of the two drugs at 48 weeks.
As previously described, 157 treatment-naive HIV-infected patients were randomized to receive etravirine (four 100-mg tablets once daily) or efavirenz (one 600-mg tablet once daily), each in combination with two nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). Sixty percent of the patients received tenofovir/FTC, 26% received abacavir/3TC, and 14% received AZT/3TC. The study was sponsored by the maker of etravirine.
