Tenofovir is widely used in the treatment of HIV-infected pregnant women because of its tolerability. However, current U.S. guidelines cite AZT/3TC as the preferred nucleoside backbone for pregnant women, in part because of concerns about potential fetal bone toxicity with tenofovir. These concerns stem from animal studies, as well as limited human surveillance data showing marginal signals of bone and growth problems in children receiving long-term tenofovir.
