Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has been shown to be efficacious in reducing HIV acquisition risk among men who have sex with men (MSM) (JW AIDS Clin Care Nov 23 2010). However, data are conflicting on whether this intervention will prove to be cost-effective in the U.S.
In the present study, researchers used a deterministic dynamic model to estimate the cost-effectiveness of PrEP versus no PrEP among MSM in the U.S. over a 20-year horizon. They evaluated the strategy both in the general MSM population and in high-risk MSM (i.e., men with an average of 5 partners annually).
Results demonstrated that if 20% of the general MSM population initiated PrEP, 13% of projected infections could be averted, and the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio w…
