Low bone mass has been reported in HIV-positive adults and children, but data on adolescents and young adults have been limited. In the present study, researchers compared bone mass in 199 young men (age range, 14–25) with recently acquired HIV infection and 53 age-matched men without HIV infection.
The HIV-positive men were recruited on the basis of treatment status: 105 were antiretroviral therapy (ART)-naive, 52 were receiving a nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI)-based regimen, and 42 were receiving a protease inhibitor (PI)-based regimen.
