Racial minorities, women, the poor, and other groups that are traditionally underserved experience healthcare disparities in the context of a variety of medical conditions (JW Gen Med Sep 30 2005), including HIV infection (JW AIDS Clin Care Mar 10 2008). Investigators examined this issue by studying 6366 patients who received care at an HIV clinic in inner-city Baltimore between 1995 and 2010. Blacks constituted about three quarters of the cohort, women about one third.
During the study period, the cohort's median age rose from 38 to 48, the percentage of patients who had acquired HIV through injection-drug use decreased from 58% to 36%, and the percentage who had acquired HIV from heterosexual contact increased from 46% to 56%. From 2005 to…
