The WHO hopes to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV by 2015. However, overall patterns of peripartum adherence to antiretroviral prophylaxis — the cornerstone supporting the WHO goal — have not been systematically studied.
Researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 48 studies that included estimates of women's adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) during pregnancy, postnatally, or both. The studies were conducted worldwide and published between 1998 and 2011; they used various definitions of “adequate” adherence, with the minimum of ingested doses ranging from >80% to 100%.
