Treatment-as-prevention significantly reduced transmission rates during the first year — and overall when the index partner had become infected through blood or plasma transfusion or heterosexual sex.

One randomized, controlled trial (HPTN 052) and several observational studies have demonstrated the potential for antiretroviral therapy (ART) to decrease the risk for onward HIV transmission. These findings have influenced WHO guidelines on management of serodiscordant couples and have spurred ART scale-up. Understanding the effect of treatment-as-prevention in real-world settings is critical for gauging the overall impact of this strategy in comprehensive HIV control efforts.
