Women account for 23% of new HIV diagnoses in the U.S., with black women disproportionately affected. In a multisite cohort study, researchers explored risk behaviors associated with HIV acquisition among women living in 10 U.S. urban areas with high rates of HIV infection and poverty.
Women aged 18 to 44 with at least one HIV risk behavior during the preceding 6 months and no known diagnosis of HIV were eligible for inclusion. At baseline and 6 and 12 months, participants underwent HIV testing and computer-assisted self-interviews that assessed socioeconomic factors, mental health symptoms, sexual behavior, and healthcare access. HIV-prevention counseling and free condoms were provided at each visit.
