The efficacy of antiretroviral therapy (ART) has improved since the introduction of potent combination regimens in the mid-1990s. In a recent study involving HIV-infected patients from 17 NA-ACCORD cohorts, investigators examined trends and disparities in treatment initiation within 6 months of ART eligibility (defined as a CD4 count <350 cells/mm3 or an AIDS-defining illness) and in virologic suppression (i.e., HIV RNA ≤500 copies/mL) within 1 year of eligibility. Variables analyzed for their effect on time trends included geographic location, patient demographics, CD4-cell count, viral load, and psychosocial factors such as substance use and mental illness.
