The success of antiretroviral therapy (ART) leads to interesting questions about the long-term health of HIV-infected patients who are doing well on ART relative to that of uninfected individuals. To explore this issue, investigators assessed mortality in non–injection drug users drawn from the continuous ART control arms of the ESPRIT and SMART trials. Patients were included in the analysis if they had both suppressed viral loads and CD4-cell counts >350 cells/mm3 at any time during the preceding 6 months. Standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) were calculated by comparing death rates in the study population with general population death rates obtained from the Human Mortality Database.
