The two nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor combinations tenofovir/FTC and abacavir/3TC have been jostling for primacy for some years now, with trial results generally favoring tenofovir/FTC and earning it “preferred” status in U.S. Department of Health and Human Services guidelines. Researchers compared the two combinations again in a randomized, open-label study in which 311 HIV-infected adults who were virologically suppressed for at least 3 months on abacavir/3TC and a boosted protease inhibitor were assigned to either continue the same regimen or replace the nucleosides with tenofovir/FTC. The study was sponsored by the manufacturer of tenofovir/FTC.
